THE FOLLOWING PRODUCTS ARE SUGGESTED TO HELP YOU MEET THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE SWANK MS DIET
The Swank Diet recommends a minimum of one teaspoon fish oil daily. As we learn more and more about the health benefits of omega-3 fats (MS, heart disease, cognition, atherosclerosis, etc.), more and more options become available.
There has been a growing concern about the potential for fish oil products to be contaminated with heavy metals. This is usually a concern when the fish used in the manufacture of the oil have been taken from polluted waters. However, fish oil that is prepared from fish taken from clean, unpolluted water and processed via a method involving distillation is generally free from heavy metal contamination. Most of the fish from which our fish oil products are made originate from the cold waters of the south Atlantic and south Pacific oceans. The following oils are of the highest quality (undetectable levels of lead, arsenic, cadmium, aluminum, and mercury) and all meet the recommended criteria for the Swank Diet.
Opti EPA Enteric Coated
These capsules are the most concentrated form of omega-3 and provide a good blend of EPA (660 mg) and DHA (340 mg). They are formulated to prevent the fishy taste that often comes following supplementation with omega-3s. This product is the richest source of omega-3s for the price!
Similar to the Opti-EPA, these capsules are enteric coated to prevent burping up fish oil. The small size of the Opti-DHA makes it ideal for those who have a difficult time swallowing pills.
While little research has been done comparing salmon oil to the oils of other fish, this product is presented as an option for those who prefer diversity.
This product sources its DHA from algae, rather than fish, making it suitable for individuals who are allergic to fish. (As with any severe allergy, introduce slowly and work with your local health care provider). Many individuals who choose to limit their consumption of animal products prefer Neuromins, since fish are not used in the production of this product. The capsule does contain gelatin.

It has long been known that the risk of MS increases as one moves further from the equator. Only recently has the role of vitamin D, a vitamin we get from the sun, been elucidated in MS. In the past few years, research demonstrates that vitamin D deficiency increases the risk of MS whereas intake of vitamin D is associated with a lower incidence of MS. Vitamin D deficiency is now recognized as an epidemic in the United States, especially for in areas with limited sun exposure (the northern half of the US) and those who spend most of their time indoors. In MS, the risk of osteoporosis is high, and prophylactic vitamin D and calcium should be considered at an early stage, as these nutrients are essential to prevent bone loss.
Ultra Protein Plus Powder (Pea-based Protein Powder)
Getting adequate amounts of protein in the diet can be difficult if one chooses to limit their consumption of meat and dairy, common sources of protein in many industrialized societies. Starting your day with a protein-containing smoothie is a quick, healthy way to get you and your family out the door. Adequate amounts of protein will prevent the crash that usually comes an hour after eating high-carbohydrate meals.
There are several reasons to avoid dairy if you have MS and most protein supplements are derived from whey, a milk protein. This pea protein supplement is a one of the most complete, hypoallergenic, cost-effective ways to get a high dose of protein and nutrients.
Vitamin B12 (B12)
B12 is important for the formation of myelin in the brain & spinal cord. In relapsing-remitting MS, there may be a significant amount of healing (remyelination) that occurs- by supplementing with the ingredients necessary for the formation of myelin, we can reduce the risk of limiting factors in the healing process. Some literature even suggests supplementation may encourage the regeneration of myelin.
Recent studies suggest B12 plays an important role in regulating the immune system. It is possible that a subgroup of patients diagnosed with MS may actually have B12 deficiency contributing to their neurological symptoms.
The immune-regulatory properties of normal, healthy gut bacteria, probiotics, have been known for some time. Probiotics do not stimulate the immune system, but prevents it from overreacting, especially in autoimmune diseases. Whereas some individuals may need to supplement with probiotics long-term, others find it is only necessary following a course of antibiotics (at which time gut bacteria are usually depleted) or when their immune systems are run down.
